Shopping at Vintage Shops
A few weeks ago, a friend and I spent the afternoon wandering through two vintage shops. My friend was looking for a cool new outfit for an upcoming party and I was going just to browse. I thought a lot of items were really cool and would make really great gifts. Although most vintage items are slightly higher in price than at at regular second hand store; and the items are used, the uniqueness and style are really great. Here’s some things that I look for at a vintage shop:
–A period-piece outfit — vintage clothing as evening wear can be really elegant. Think of how elegant things were back in the 1920′s. I usually find that vintage stores have more of my size (I’m petite) than many regular stores.
–1st edition books – if you know someone’s literary preferences, a first edition or a signed copy of a title from their favorite author makes a great book. I’ve found some great 1st editions at vintage stores.
–Interesting tableware – I’m a big fan of elegant tea cups. Vintage stores are great places to find interesting designs that are no longer made. Pick up a set of 6 unmatched cups (with saucers) which are fine for afternoon tea.
–Missing flatware — Do you have a silverware set that has a missing piece? You might be able to find the desired design at a vintage shop.
–Elegant table top decor — do you wish for on piece that will make a great centerpiece on your table or entry table. Vintage shops have a lot of nice lamps, vases, or decorative bowls that can serve as a unique centerpiece.
Most of these items are hit or miss, so I never go to a vintage shop when I must get a gift quickly. I do however enjoy browsing, so I count that part of the fun.
