Feed Your Mind: What I’m Reading — July 2010

I have been remiss in talking about books that I’ve read.  Frankly, the more time I spend reading blogs, forums, and newsletters, the less time I have for books. I probably need to fix that.  Anyway, I have been reading a lot on nutrition, fitness, and some on financial management.  Here’s a sampling (links are Amazon affiliate links):

John Bogle on Investing: The First 50 Years by John Bogle– Bogle is the founder of Vanguard, the index fund behemoth.  I am a fan of Vanguard and their low fee, relative no-nonsense approach to savings and investment.  The book highlights John Bogle’s thinking in that area and gives a lot of information on index funds, asset allocation strategies, and saving for retirement. It is a good reference tool to have around and probably should be one of the investment classics alongside Malkiel and Graham & Dodd.  What I didn’t know is that Bogle had written his college senior thesis on the role of the investment company that became the template for his future work. The thesis is reproduced in its entirety at the back of the book.  Pretty nifty for a young lad.

The New Rules of Lifting for Women: Lift Like a Man, Look Like a Goddess by Lou Schuler — I have been reading a lot about fitness and health.  Although I am reasonably active, I have never really pushed myself in terms of strength training.  This book is interesting in that it is geared toward women and has a female model demonstrating the moves which include a barbell, dumbbells, gym equipment, or bodyweight.  I’ve recently embarked on more aggressive strength routines, using mostly bodyweight, but also heavier dumbbells, and I must say I can feel a difference already.  As the weeks go by, I will probably need to find a good way to track and promote progress. I’d be interested in any book or DVD recommendations.

The Primal Blueprint: Reprogram your genes for effortless weight loss, vibrant health, and boundless energy by Mark Sisson — The book that has made the most impact on my thinking recently has been Primal Blueprint.  You may have noticed that my recipes have shifted slightly in the past few weeks. A lot of this is due to the relative success I’ve had by going on the Primal Blueprint plan.  I’m enjoying the food immensely, picked up heavier weights, started sprinting, and am examining things like sleep quality. Although I’ve only lost a couple of pounds, I generally feel a lot better.  Going forward on this blog, I’m planning to feature more primal-compliant recipes, and probably also talk about some of the fitness and lifestyle issues as well.

I’d love to hear what’s on your reading, either fiction or non-fiction.
