Bret, the contrast of college tuition to wage increases is what struck me. Of course debt has made up the difference. I hope this topic merits more discussion among families and policy makers and universities over the next few years. Thanks for commenting.

Elizabeth,

I covered this topic in a similar piece about bad career moves. And, I have recently met or talked to a number of people who have insane student loan debt. IMHO, student loans are one of the reasons the costs of a college education is soaring. If people had to pay for college as they attended (like we did in the old days), I imagine there would be way fewer people lining up to pay $30K per year.

It's tough to say whether doing away with student loans would make college only affordable to the wealthy or lower the cost for everyone. One thing I can say for sure is that our educational system can't keep raising costs well above inflation, when real wages are flat. Until something changes, I feel sorry for our college students.

Betty, this is one of my bugbears too. And, until very recently, it seemed taboo to discuss openly. I have met many people (and heard of far more) who have accumulated tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt for an MFA or an MA in literature or social work. Sadly, they didn't see the cost-benefit balance earlier.

Elizabeth,

You've hit on one of my personal bugbears-paying too much for your post-secondary education. If you're going to school for a traditionally lower paying profession (teaching, nursing) you probably don't want to rack up a 6-figure student loan balance.

State Universities & Community Colleges are great alternatives especially for students who need to work full-time as well as attend school.

Thanks for the great post.
