Feeling at Home
As mentioned earlier, I am on a business trip, staying in a hotel for a few days. Although I used to travel A LOT for my previous job, I still find it challenging to sleep well in hotel rooms, with the strange pillows, sounds from across the hall and time changes involved. Even more challenging is trying to eat well and not evolve to constant munching which I tend to do when I get tired. I find that there are a number of steps that have helped me to ease the unhealthiness of business travel. Hopefully, I will actually practice a number of these in the next few days:
–Make a checklist before packing, and be sure to pack health and beauty items that are part of your routine such as lotion and lip balm, so you don’t feel out of sorts.
–Try to pick the healthiest food on menus and skip the food if it’s unhealthy, even if it’s free and easily available. The hotel where I’m staying has free breakfast. They say they normally have a full American breakfast (complete with hot foods) but are renovating the kitchen and are offering a set of sugary cereals, packaged donuts and pastries. Not only do these contain trans fats, high fructose corn syrup, and lots of empty calories from refined flour, but I’m fairly certain I would feel ill if I ate them.
–Go for a long walk or to the gym, especially if you feel very tired at the end of the day. Regular exercise will also help sleeping.
–Set the thermostat down a couple of degrees for sleeping. I also set both the alarm and wakeup call if I have an important early meeting or plane to catch. This way, I feel more comfortable should one not work.
I hope these are helpful, because they work for me.
